Three Queens on King brings a touch of British brunch royalty to this quiet end of King St. Still fresh and new, it sits on a corner away from the busy hub of Newtown with plenty of nearby street parking and so far, no queues.
Light, spacious and clean, it has a very similar vibe to it's older sibling St Jude. Paper marche horses decorate the cafe along with a clutter of ornaments and knick knacks on the high shelves. If you look closely you'll find a framed picture of Prince William, Kate and baby George.
There is a great selection for all day brunching and they rock out their own version of specialty cold drinks - peach iced tea, ginger beer or limonade $5 and hot teas including fennel twig $4.50. Make sure you ask about their specials as there is always something different.
One week, Bubble and squeak was a special - how very English. I wouldn't be surprised if they bring out the black pudding for an English breakfast one day. You can keep it simple and order toast with Three Queens conserve $6 or eggs your way with toast $9.50 plus an addition of sides.
You could go with the slightly different Toad in a hole (Aussie version) $12. If you don't know what to expect, there is an egg cooked inside a bun topped with a fried egg. The top of the bun is soaked in butter and bacon bits. Add some bacon as sides and it's a bacon and egg roll.
If possible, try the french classic croque monsieur $13.50 or with an extra egg, the croque madame $16. There are other classics such as bircher muesli $9 or the cured salmon salad $19 and not so classic like the soft shelled crab salad $19 or the tequila chicken sandwich $14.
Three Queens brings the zucchini mint and fetta cake to rival St Jude's pumpkin and sweet corn fritters. It's a close call but they are both quite different. Rocket is tossed in a wholegrain mustard dressing served with fresh crumbed fetta which is different to the hollandaise covered pumpkin and sweet corn fritters.
It's not hard to treat yourself to something sweet here. The strawberry and yogurt cake was amazing and I was so tempted to order the apple fritters with toffee sauce $16.50 but I really need to watch my waistline.
This cafe is yet to spam Instagram and has escaped the weekend brunch queues so far. I like the fact that you can easily find parking, it's menu simple with some interesting twists and the place is unpretentious.

Skip the busy strip of Surry Hills and look for this corner cafe that borderlines Redfern. Understated from the outside, you'll be hypnotised by its charm and allure inside and satisfied with the good honest house made food and drinks.
After three years on the brunch scene you can still expect weekend queues - a sure sign of it's popularity. The breakfast menu is all day, everyday. The one page menu starts with eggs your way on toast ($10.50) where you can add sides or you can choose from the seasonal options or the regulars that includes pumpkin and corn fritters, eggs benedicts, smashed avocado and french toast.
All omelettes should look like this - fluffy, fat and cheesy. When I ordered the omelette it was filled with smoked salmon, feta and tomato. Nice combination and it was very well seasoned. Don't forget their house made tomato relish, it's delicious.
The eggs benedict - I have to say it's amongst one of the best in Sydney. The hollandaise was tasty and this version had a thick slice of gypsy smoked ham which added a delicious depth of flavour. You can also get smoked salmon or spinach instead of the smoked ham.
The pumpkin and sweet corn fritters have been on their menu since day one and there's a reason why. It must be their secret recipe because it rivals Bills famous corn fritters and to top it off, there's a poached egg and that hollandaise sauce.
St Jude has specialty drinks that are made in house which are a treat. I love the refreshing house made ginger beer ($4.50) that comes with a slice of cucumber and lemon. Iced coffee ($5.00) are perfect on a hot summer's day and the strong aroma of the coffee is ready to knock any coffee addict's socks off.
The hot teas are the real deal made on the spot. The Morrocan mint tea arrives super hot in a tall glass. It smells amazing as the hot sugary (honey?) mix is infused with a cinnamon stick, star anise, mint and a slice of lemon.
If the food doesn't entice you, the house made drinks will or just the coffee and treats. If not, don't let those creepy knick knack collection of religious artifacts and dolls on the top shelf scare you away :).

Eeeny meeny miny mo... to which Surry Hills cafe should I go?
Rustic Pearl is a small intimate cafe serving up the most delicious Mediterranean, Turkish, Balkan inspired dishes and drinks. The all day breakfast menu is a winner for both vegetarians and meat lovers and my beloved eggs benedict makes an appearance with a choice of either bacon, ocean trout or lobster.
Yes, you guessed it. I got the Bosphorous benedict. Huge juicy chunks of lobster pop in your mouth while the brain processes the oozing egg yolk, avocado and hollandaise. Served on turkish toast, it's a refreshing combination and thankfully there's no heat from the chopped chilli - yum!
I would struggle miserably on a Masterchef ingredients test. Looking at the pile of sauteed mushrooms on this bruschetta all I could see was errrmm... button mushrooms, shitake? All I can say is that it worked a treat with the herby goat's cheese and that green spread of agresto (tasted like parsley pesto).
This is definitely "dude food" sporting the delicious sucuk sausage. Did you just try to pronounce that? With an Aussie accent it may sound rude but the c is a soft j. Mixed with sauteed spinach, olives, cherry tomato and dried apricots, the labne and baba ganoush softens the dish in a delicious mouthful of flavours. Recommend adding the poached eggs.
I didn't know you could get sweet gozleme but here's one filled with melted nutella, warm slices of banana, coconut and almonds. The pastry is slighter thinner and crispier, perfect on a cold winter's day.
There is a bit of everything on the drinks list. Hot and cold drinks, fresh juices, smoothies, frappes. The tea is loose leaf served with cute little tea glasses and if you order a large coffee, you'll get a bowl to sink your face into! The turkish apple iced tea is refreshingly sweet on a hot day with slices of apple and cucumber.
So many little things stand out here, like the sharp knife to cut through those crusty sourdough slices of bread, stainless steel straws and fruit to seal your water bottle. They even apologise that wait times apply as everything is made to serve to ensure it's freshness.
Eeny meeny miny mo... pick Rustic Pearl if you get a chance. Blink and you'll miss this place so make sure it's on your radar. Don't be surprised if there is a weekend queue, there's limited seating with seven tables for two inside and two tables outside but it is worth the wait.

Saturday mornings are always jam packed with things to do, usually it's the boring house chores. This Saturday was no different but a sleep in put my first meal of the day totally out of whack. By the time I was ready it was 12pm. Does that mean I'm having lunch? The conundrum.
I still wanted coffee and eggs so ventured out to Surry Hills, the mecca of all day breakfast cafes. Spotting the queue, Devon cafe didn't need any signs. After a 5 minute wait, we were seated at the back where graffiti is scattered all over the walls and the industrial fridge cooler.
The menu was polished with gold printed letterhead and footer and listed the most unique items. Nine creatively designed combinations narrows the choices down but does not make selecting any easier. I wanted to try everything, if only they had a tasting platter.
The eggs blini probably the most instagram'd Sydney breakfast item I've seen, I finally got to snap one for myself. Not only so photogenic, it tasted pretty good. The fluffy buckwheat blini just soaked up the flavours with each bite.
How can you ever go wrong with a roast pork bun? This version was deliciously different with bits of green apple and coated with crispy fried onions. The chips and nahm jim sauce (tasted like mayo) were a great finish to the meal.
Not being able to squeeze anymore food in, I had food envy as I watched the "little lost bread", an amazing stack of french toast, fruit and ice cream and the "ogre happy meal", fried egg, hash potatoes and seared ox tongue roll out. Not only do they know how to cook, they sure know how to plate up!
Finishing off my brunch I got the Devon's affogato. What a treat. Amazing strong velvety coffee with vanilla ice cream
and chocolate sauce - it was the real deal.
Lunch? Brunch? It doesn't really matter here if you're keen to try something a little different and perhaps inching towards unconventional. Soon opening on Danks St, I wonder what other inspirational meals will be created.

If you're a local, I wouldn't be surprised if you knew the menu off by heart and all the staff by name... Super friendly and down to earth, they make you feel so welcome and the food and coffee are something to come back for.
This was one of the Sunday Brunch Club ventures and there was no surprise when we had to wait around 30 minutes at 10.30am but we were super happy to get our coffee ($3.50) while waiting.
The all day breakfast options are kept to a single page but that doesn't mean the decision is any easier. There is an appealing variety of combinations using organic or free range ingredients (where possible) and their list of organic teas are intriguing.
I ended up choosing the classic eggs benedict ($16.50) which was served on a piece of delicious fresh sourdough bread. I've always struggled with the hard crusts of sourdough but it really worked this time and the addition of dijon mustard to the hollandaise sauce was just perfect. Watch out, this one is moving to the top of the eggs benedict list!
My other choice would've been the trout rosti ($17.50) but I wanted poached eggs. A1 was thinking the same thing and ordered it with the egg as a side. She loved it although was surprised the corn rosti was just one large corn fritter.
R1 who is not a big fan of scrambled eggs ordered the avo eggs ($15.50) and was delighted with her "eggs scrambled with 'erbs".
T1 inhaled her vanilla pancakes ($14.50)! Must have been really good. R1 pointed out that the pancake itself was more like a thin sponge cake but was still yummy.
I didn't try this lamb bruschetta ($18.00) and I can only assume it was amazing as V1 didn't speak the whole time she ate and R1 cooed at how soft and delicious her mouthful of lamb was.
From the outside, this place look liked it was once a pub and after some research it was meant to be but was a general store for 112 years! Not one inch would've given that away with it's modern vintage furnishings and a Victorian charm.
With plenty of parking, plenty of outdoor and indoor space, you really can't go wrong here except for the queue which is expected for such a popular place.

Social media has this all day breakfast place covered. The hype is real. I loved it.
If it wasn't for the crowd waiting outside you would miss this cafe which is marked only by their gold logo plaque. Once you peep in, it's a clever transformation of a massive open space.

While waiting outside for a table we struggled to narrow down our selection as every item looked so good. Even the crunchy brioche french toast was calling out to me and I don't usually have sweet brunches. Eventually we settled to share a fish croquette and a narnie plus our own preferences - what two little piglets we were!

At the back, a blackboard wall and small area is used as a kid's corner but I'm sure it also entertains the parents too.
The maitre d' added a touch of class to an overall outstanding service and it was great to see one of the owners getting amongst it, serving and clearing tables. This place is filled with the echos of conversations but the layout voids the risk of eavesdroppers and squashed bodies. This place is definitely worth waiting in a queue for, time and time again.
